SUNDAY SYMPOSIUM #1

THE FLOW OF ALL THINGS

Neo: What are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?
Morpheus: No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

The bullet-time effect in The Matrix changed the game in terms of SFX in the movie business yet it did more than this. It gave us a visual representation of what it looks like when you discover your Phoenix Fire and break through the belief that the best defence involves avoidance rather than acceptance.

Life will attack, it is how we react that determines the result.

I have talked before about the transformative effects of the message contained within this modern-day parable of awakening, as have so many others and I will continue to do so. Why? Because the message is so strong, so powerful, so true that to be blind to it, is to follow Cypher in believing that ‘ignorance is bliss’ and betraying your mission in favour of being plugged back into the Matrix to live a muted, mundane life, rather than a marvellous, if not challenging one. The path of self-awareness is not easy, is not kind and is not comforting. It is the hard choice, the choice of the seeker, the choice of the discontented and the damned. Damned and yet blessed, ‘burdened with glorious purpose’ as Loki might say.

The Hero’s Journey is laid out before us all, we just have to choose, blue pill or red, alive or dead, status quo or status go. Some might say that the first step is the hardest yet there will be many trials and tribulations along the way, therefore resilience is key, and this comes from awareness and acceptance. Aware that we won’t always get it right, accepting that we will falter and fall, that there will always be challenges we could not comprehend or prepare for.

Just like Neo though, if we are open to the possibilities, we will graduate from beginner, to student, to master. At first, we might be unable to avoid the bullet, but we will learn to flow through the lion’s share of them, until eventually, we are able to deflect and observe them through a prism of bemusement and acquiescence. Becoming aware, that although we cannot stop life pulling the trigger, we can negate the impact by releasing the ego and accepting;

The only thing we can control is how we react to things that are outside our control - Ryan Holiday.

The secret to fulfilment is not in chasing highs and resisting lows but in accepting the flow of all things. Take pleasure in the good, inspiration in the bad, and embrace the ugly, because that is where our growth from duckling to swan begins.

As we grow, we must learn to flow, before we can finally say no.
